Of the hundreds of books I have designed, the vast majority have been for large publishing companies who always maintain separation of designer from author. With the advent of good-quality digital printing and social media networking, however, more authors are trying the route of self-publishing. It is a great privilege for me to work directly with authors to achieve their goals. Typically I design the cover and the interior of the book, help with project management, and find the right printer. I can also recommend editors and proofreaders, illustrators and photographers.

Greta Sibley envisioned a design for my book An Island in Time that brought disparate elements into harmony: antique and contemporary photographs, engravings, old and new maps, prose and poetry. She recommended specialists to improve the project: a gifted illustrator to render my hand-drawn maps, a Photoshop maven to improve photos. All the elements then came together to offer a unique and seamless story to the reader. Every step of the way our collaboration was marked with easy communication. Greta’s fastidious attention to detail along with her designer’s imaginative eye created a beautiful book that met my own vision for a project that had taken years to research and write.
