Young Readers Biography
Zora!
Judith Bloom Fradin and Dennis Brindell Fradin
Clarion Books, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Set in Truesdell and Mighty Tuxedo.

Zora Neale Hurston was a dynamic character. The design needed to reflect her high energy as well as the period in which she lived. Art deco borders were adapted to fit featured art, and a simpler treatment created to decorate smaller images.

Memoir
The Hundred-Year Walk
Dawn Anahid MacKeen
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Set in Requiem, Penumbra, and Nuptial Script.

Nuptial Script appeared in the cover design. I was able to use it for the part and chapter titles only because these titles were consistently short in length. A little bit of a script font goes a long way.

Cookbook
1,000 Spanish Recipes
Penelope Casas
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Set in Centaur and Gotham.

1,000 Spanish Recipes is one of a long series of books featuring national cuisines. The requirement was to work within the confines of the series yet come up with elements that would reflect the culture. We decided to adapt a Moorish pattern.

Religion
Living the Questions
David M. Felten and Jeff Procter-Murphy
HarperOne
Set in Minion and Futura.

As a designer, sometimes you just need to get out of the way.

Poetry
Thrall
Natasha Trethewey
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Set in Minion and Bickham Script.

It is never more important to let the text speak for itself than when working in the service of poetry.

Eastern Art and Philosophy
Ensō
Audrey Yoshiko Seo
Weatherhill
Set in Minion and Galahad.

I am never happier than when I get to design something quiet.

Wellness/Self-help
The Woman’s Book of Yoga & Health
Linda Sparrowe with Yoga Sequences by Patricia Walden
Shambhala

Designing and laying out a heavily-illustrated title can feel a lot like doing an I. Q. test all day long. Much pushing and pulling of text and images is involved in finding the sweet spot, over and over, where all works together for the benefit of the reader who, after all, may be doing yoga while reading the book!

Poetry
To the Left of Time
Thomas Lux
Mariner Books, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Set in ITC Galliard and Veneer.

Every volume of poems presents a unique combination of elements. Balancing the trim size and margins with the line length in order to avoid lines turning over is a particular labor. There is usually a smattering of epigraphs and attributes and dedications and notes to cope with too. I love to fuss over every line.

Memoir
Chickens in the Road
Suzanne McMinn
HarperOne
Set in Mrs. Eaves and Strangelove.

The design direction was “feminine country chic”! I had to think about that.

Book of Correspondence
What There Is to Say We Have Said
Suzanne Marrs
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Set in Electra and Type Embellishments.

This is a lengthy book of correspondence, and was a challenge to page. As always in this situation, the goal was to find the minimal treatment that would be clear and space conserving.
