Zora Neale Hurston was a dynamic character. The design needed to reflect her high energy as well as the period in which she lived. Art deco borders were adapted to fit featured art, and a simpler treatment created to decorate smaller images.

Nuptial Script appeared in the cover design. I was able to use it for the part and chapter titles only because these titles were consistently short in length. A little bit of a script font goes a long way.

1,000 Spanish Recipes is one of a long series of books featuring national cuisines. The requirement was to work within the confines of the series yet come up with elements that would reflect the culture. We decided to adapt a Moorish pattern.

The Collected Poems consists of many volumes published over a long and distinguished career. Naturally, text elements were handled differently by editors and designers so the challenge here was to create a design flexible enough to accommodate all variations and consistent enough to feel solid for the reader of the collected works.

Designing and laying out a heavily-illustrated title can feel a lot like doing an I. Q. test all day long. Much pushing and pulling of text and images is involved in finding the sweet spot, over and over, where all works together for the benefit of the reader who, after all, may be doing yoga while reading the book!

To the Left of Time

Every volume of poems presents a unique combination of elements. Balancing the trim size and margins with the line length in order to avoid lines turning over is a particular labor. There is usually a smattering of epigraphs and attributes and dedications and notes to cope with too. I love to fuss over every line.

Chickens in the Road

Set in Mrs. Eaves and Strangelove.

The design direction was “feminine country chic”! I had to think about that.

Book of Correspondence
What There Is to Say We Have Said

This is a lengthy book of correspondence, and was a challenge to page. As always in this situation, the goal was to find the minimal treatment that would be clear and space conserving.
